Description

The People’s Bank of China has issued a series of 2018 Chinese Wu Xu Year (Year of the Dog) gold and silver commemorative coins on November 16th 2017. The program consists of 17 coins, with 10 in gold and 7 in silver, all of which are the legal tender of the People’s Republic of China.

   Theme Background

 The Zodiac is a set of dating system on the basis of twelve animals, which is inextricably linked to the ancient Chinese lunar calendar. It sprouted in the Shang and Zhou dynasties and gradually matured in the Qin and Han Dynasties. It has been widely spread among the working people for more than two thousand years. It has been loved and respected by the people and gradually affects all aspects of people's lives. It is no longer a simple symbol of the year, and the passages of time have injected rich connotations into it, forming a unique zodiac culture in China.

The Zodiac Series commemorative coins of precious metals are a combination of traditional culture and diverse genres of periods of time. In addition to the demonstration of the zodiac design, this series of commemorative coins also incorporates the essence of a variety of traditional folk cultures, enriching the characteristics of the traditional zodiac culture.

The theme of the Zodiac series of commemorative coins has a new distinguishing feature every year. It has long been favored by many coin lovers. Among them, there are many excellent commemorative coins that have won the World Coin Award and the Chinese Arts and Crafts Hundred Flowers Award. The Zodiac series of gold and silver commemorative coins is one of the most important continuation projects in the history of China's commemorative coins of precious metals. The People's Bank of China has been publicly issuing it as a key project of the year.

The dog ranks eleventh in the twelve zodiacs, and its “time of the twelfth hour” is 7-9 pm. The dog is one of the earliest domesticated animals, a companion that humans share weal and woe with, and is considered an animal empathetic to human nature. It is particularly loyal to human beings and thus it symbolizes loyalty. It also has a symbolic implication to foretell good omens and to ward off evil spirits.

In 2018, it is the Chinese Lunar New Year of the Dog, and the People's Bank of China is scheduled to issue a set of 2018 Chinese Wuxu (Dog) gold and silver commemorative coins in November 2017. The set of commemorative coins totals 17 pieces, including 10 gold commemorative coins and 7 silver commemorative coins, all of which are the legal tender of the People's Republic of China.

I. Designs of the Coins

i. Obverse Design

The common obverse of the gold and silver commemorative coins features the national emblem of the People’s Republic of China, auspicious design of lotus and fish symbolizing a surplus year after yearthe title of PRC and the year date.

ii. Reverse Design

30g fan-shaped silver coin bears the common reverse of an image of a lifelike dog in the foreground and a decorative design of the dog as the background, the face value and the words “Wu Xu” in Chinese.

II. Specifications and Mintage of the Coins

30g fan-shaped silver coin is proof in quality, 85mm in excircle radius, 60mm in incircle radius, 30 degrees in central angle, 10 Yuan in face value, 99.9% in fineness, and contains 30 grams of pure silver. The total mintage is 60,000 pieces.
